Four Mountain Lions find a new home in Bridgeport, Texas.

Center for Animal Research and Education (CARE) would like to announce the arrival of four mountain lions from the recently closed Fejervary Children's Zoo in Davenport Iowa. After months of fundraising and building, the $45,000 habitat is finally complete. The Mountain Lions; Beauty, Beast, Tazz and Majanna now have a 80,000 square foot open enclosure complete with beautiful trees and platforms to climb on. The enclosure was specially built with the older two big cats in mind. A forty foot cable bridge starts at 2 feet off the ground and links climbing areas together high in the trees.

The big cats arrived on Monday December 8 and are settling in well in their new home, says Executive Director of the Sanctuary, Heidi Berry. We are very proud and thankful for both physical and monetary donations that arrived from all over the country, Berry said. Local community organizations; Sheppard Air Force Base, TXI, Gala’s Goodtimes, L&L Truck Repair, Select Silk Screenings have been pivotal in the completion of the project. During these hard economic times it is uplifting to know people are still willing to give to those who can not care for themselves.

The joyous arrival of these mountain lions increased the number of CARE cats to 56. Four more cats saved. A joyous occasion for some, but not all. An e-mail arrived at sunset. “Economic hard times... A zoo in Nebraska is closing. Three tigers will be without a home. CARE has no room for them at this time. What a bitter sweet day.

Scott Fairley, a long term CARE volunteer and his co-workers at MidAmerican Energy recently organized a company wide bake sale to raise funds for the Mountain Lion Rescue Project. The event was a success and they raised $1,614.77 to help bring Beauty, Beast, Tazz, and Majanna to Texas!  Thanks so much to all who were involved in making this possible!
