CONTINUOUS GOALS

Goal #1: Increase Funding for Annual Operations

Continue previous strategic plan for future fundraising and have projected income from corporate and foundation grants, sponsorships and individual giving. Additionally, projected earned revenue from tours, retreats and other educational programs will help defray operating expenses. Our continued most critical need is for funding for general operating expense.

Action Steps:

Continue Safe Haven newsletter and direct mail fundraising appeals.
Expand donor base through advertising and networking in order to raise public awareness.
Complete gift shop on-line.

Goal #2: Secure Sponsorship Relationships

We have had great success with in-kind donations with many local organizations. Continuing fostering these relationships, along with expanding to new in-kind donors is necessary.

Action Steps:

Further develop relationships with previous donors.
Pursue building similar new relationships with other businesses and corporations.
Utilize the publicity, visibility and public awareness that comes with collaborations of this sort.
Initiate a relationship with the newly opened local Lowe’s improvement center.

Goal #3: Create and Produce Collateral Marketing Materials

Building the public awareness of the mission and work of the Center is key to the success of all programs and projects. Efforts to effectively communicate the mission to the public along with building a compelling case for support must be made to ensure the future of the organization.

Action Steps:

Design, produce and distribute promotional packages, brochures and press releases.
Acquire an inventory of logo branded gift shop items for sale on-site and on-line.
Continually develop new and fresh ideas therefore inspiring others to get more involved in the felines of CARE.

IMMEDIATE GOALS

Goal #1: Prepare for upcoming fundraising events

Bowling tournament, fashion show and domestic cat shows are tentatively scheduled for the first quarter. Delegating responsibilities to those who can help is pivotal for successful events.

Action Steps:

Plan meetings for those who can help
Obtain silent auction items.
Network volunteer resources.

Goal # 2: Replace present housing with concrete structures

Older wood housing is in poor condition. Concrete housing will not only give the cats cooling in the summer and warmth in the winter, but would be much more sanitary and easier to clean. This type of housing will last forever.

Action Steps:

Contact alternate concrete companies in order to have the housing built faster and less expensive.
Obtain funding to replace all old structures.
Completion estimated one year (Spring 2008)

Goal #3: Prepare emergency protocol’s for natural disaster

Recent fires have raised awareness of the critical need for plans for natural disaster and preparation of the facility for such disaster.

Action Steps:

Continue relationship with local emergency response organizations, most importantly now the fire department.
Continue clearing property of any debris or vegetation that may be of consequence during a fire or tornado.

Goal #4: Direct marketing energies towards Retreat development

Concentrating on retreat development is essential. Funding from these retreats will aid in providing much needed general operating expenses.

Action Steps:

Place more aggressive advertising on the web page.
Research alternate advertising in magazines.
Begin a “word of mouth” campaign from past retreat members.

SIX-MONTH GOALS

Goal #1: Build additional enclosures

Building new enclosures for the new young cats and better accommodating for the aging felines is necessary.

Action Steps:

Assess the possibilities for enclosure additions for long term care.
Build an enclosure for Allucia, JP, Luca and Jakey.
Reorganize cats present housing to most efficiently and inexpensively care for the cats.

Goal #2: Prepare Facility for Public Tours

To be open to the general public, the facility must have specific safety features in place throughout the compound.

Action Steps:

Purchase materials and retain skilled and unskilled labor for construction.
Construct the required safety barriers to keep the public 4 feet from the cat’s enclosures. These barriers are required in all areas accessible to the general public.

Goal #3: Obtain More Modern Medical Equipment

Continue contacting hospitals who have out-of-date equipment no longer in use. That equipment can be utilized at CARE for veterinary healthcare and emergency medical needs.

Action Steps:

Establish relationships with hospitals to receive their out-of-service equipment as a donation to CARE.

Goal #4: Revitalize adjacent property

Making neighboring property presentable to the public will require much work. Reorganizing facility structure will be a necessity.

Action Steps:

Organize volunteer work crews to clean up the adjacent property.
Make plans for land and structures, i.e. gift shop?, work shop?, classrooms?. Cabins?
Secure funding to allow projects to be accomplished.

ONE-YEAR GOALS

Goal #1: Initiate Public Recreational & Educational Tours

Increased public awareness of issues affecting endangered species will be achieved through outreach to the community. CARE must be open to the public in order to serve our mission.

Action Steps:

Continue training volunteers in aspects of public relations.
Script tour guides with educational information and answers to frequently asked questions.
Market the opportunity to visit CARE to school & youth groups, travel & adventure clubs and social organizations.
Schedule 1-2 tours on Saturdays and Sundays.
Expand the tour schedule to include weekday classroom field trips, after-schools programs and teaching labs.

Goal #2: “Big Cat Habitat” Program

Establish a multi-facetted program that would allow corporate sponsors, groups and/or individuals to completely revamp a feline’s enclosure. The refurbishment of one of CARE’s feline habitats offers a donor several levels of involvement – from personal interaction to “team-building” exercises and hands-on group activity.

Action Steps:

Research and identify corporate and private foundations interested in capital improvements.
Craft winning proposals to grantmakers with matching interests.
Promote the mission and goals of CARE to prospective corporate sponsors.

Goal #3: Expansion of the facility perimeter

In order to accommodate future animals it will be crucial to enclose areas not yet included in the perimeter. The present perimeter is at maximum capacity.

Action Steps:

Generate plans for best use of areas available.
Plant trees in areas designated for future enclosures.
Execute fundraising campaign capital necessary for expansion plan.

Goal #4: Reinstatement of the Education programs

Education is an integral component of CARE and its functioning as a non-profit organization. We must get back to the basics and create a functioning outreach program.

Action Steps:

Develop educational program formats (Drug Education, Endangered Species Education etc.)
Find the answer to, “How do we make an impact on the children when no live animals will be exhibited in the program?”
Construct promotional tools for students, schools and general public.
Contact schools visited in the past and screen their interest in a new program.

FIVE-YEAR GOALS

Goal #1: Establish AZA Membership

The qualification process for membership in the American Zoo & Aquarium Association (AZA) spans a 2-year period. Membership in this Association opens opportunities in the areas of research, funding and collaboration. AZA accreditation brings both public recognition and political benefit.

Action Steps:

Initiate the application for membership in AZA.
Continue with habitat renovation and maintenance.
Initiate research projects that support CARE’s natural methods of feeding exotic felines in captivity.
Increase communication and further positive relationships with other AZA members.

Goal #2: Strategic Acquisition of Additional Species

One benefit of AZA membership is the ability to acquire specimens from other AZA facilities, allowing CARE to expand research and education opportunities, strengthen the appeal of grant proposals and ultimately heighten public awareness of the plight of endangered species.

Action Steps:

Acquire AZA membership.
Establish a protocol for the acquisition of new species.
Construct species-specific habitats.
Network with other AZA facilities to obtain desired specimens.

Goal #3: Establish an Endowment Fund

At the core of our long-range planning is the vision to establish an endowment fund that will provide a revenue stream to offset the expenses of animal care and facility operations in perpetuity.

Action Steps:

Research and consult with professional advisors as to portfolio management.
Launch a fundraising campaign for contributions to the restricted Operations, Maintenance and Veterinary Care Endowment Funds.
